Teaching & Learning Subcommittee Meeting  

A meeting of the Teaching & Learning Subcommittee was held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 5:00 pm in the Coddington Building. Present were Mr. Paul Bregoli, Mrs. Kathryn Hubley, Mrs. Emily Lebo, and Ms. Barbara Isola, Chair. Also attending were Superintendent DeCristofaro, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Mulvey, Mr. Peter Dionne, Dr. Elizabeth Hallett, Mr. James Hennessy, Ms. Renee Malvesti, Ms. Margaret MacNeil, Ms. Maura Papile, Ms. Ann Pegg, Ms. Erin Perkins, Ms. Kimberly Quinn, Ms. Madeline Roy, Mr. Keith Segalla, Mr. Edward Smith, Ms. Bridget Vaughn, and Ms. Laura Owens, Clerk.

Ms. Isola noted that all School Improvement Plan Facilities Areas of Need will be referred to the Facilities & Security Subcommittee.

Principal Renee Malvesti presented the Montclair Elementary School Improvement Plan, noting that MCAS results showed strong growth and performance above the state level including for EL students. Science Grade 5 was 33% higher than the state level for Proficient or Above. Goals for next year are consistent with the district goals, staff is pleased to continue the work of the Vertical Teams for ELA and Mathematics. Health & Wellness and PBIS are continuation goals, Montclair has an amazing staff and supportive parents surround the students.

Mrs. Lebo noted that Montclair students performed well above the state level on the Grade 4 Essay, despite the technical difficulties.

Mrs. Hubley made a motion to approve the Montclair Elementary School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Lebo seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.

Principal James Hennessy presented the Wollaston Elementary School Improvement plan, noting that Wollaston’s MCAS results exceeded the state level in every subject and every grade. Wollaston staff implemented Principal’s Path, vertical teams, focused after school programs, and family engagement. The staff are looking forward to this year’s goals, expanding vertical teams into primary grades and beginning to utilize mini-ILTS.

Mrs. Lebo said that Wollaston’s Science scores were phenomenal and received clarification about the RIT score goal.

Mrs. Hubley made a motion to approve the Wollaston Elementary School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Lebo seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.

Principal Margaret MacNeil presented the Parker Elementary School Improvement Plan, noting that she is proud to be the school’s new principal. Strength is found in the diversity of the school, parents 2 Teaching & Learning Subcommittee Meeting 11-20-2017 are partners in their students’ education. New this year at Parker, the Principal’s Path is focused on new initiatives, including Parent-Child Day for Kindergarten and curriculum-focused after school activities. Guidance initiatives support PBIS and build student self-esteem. Data highlights include being at or above the state level for performance at all grades and strong growth for ELA and Mathematics at both Grades 4 and 5. Looking ahead, ongoing and consistent professional development opportunities will provide additional instructional differentiation.

Mrs. Hubley made a motion to approve the Parker Elementary School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Lebo seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.

Principal Peter Dionne presented the Bernazzani Elementary School Improvement Plan, noting that planning and teamwork make the school run as it does. Through the support of Professional Development, Mathematics and ELA are focused on differentiated small group instruction. Key to the school’s success have been grade level and vertical team meetings, MCAS results are competitive with the state level for all grades and subject areas. Parent support through creative community events and technology initiatives.

Mrs. Lebo asked about the condition of the Furnace Brook Parkway, muddy along the verge. The DCR will provide gravel. Mrs. Lebo asked about after school activities, Mr. Dionne said additional sessions have been added to accommodate everyone interested.

Mrs. Lebo made a motion to approve the Bernazzani Elementary School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Hubley seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.

Principal Ann Pegg presented the Merrymount Elementary School Improvement Plan, highlighting the Wellness goal and how social emotional well-being and a positive school culture contribute to overall student success. The Character Trait of the Month is supported through lessons and readings; Unity Day is a school-wide event, and International Night was held last week, 27 families from different countries shared their cultural background with other Merrymount families.

Mrs. Lebo made a motion to approve the Merrymount Elementary School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Hubley seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.
